Is Organic Food Too Expensive?

Ok, the claim organic food costs less than non-organic food can see your head nodding in argument. How can I make a claim organic is less costly than non-organic food? Well I’ll show you

If you buy a Broccoli Crown that’s organic you can pay a cost that is higher than non-organic broccoli. So am I contradicting myself already and making my discussion pointless? Absolutely not! Let’s put a frame around this conversation.

First we want to work out what represents “cost.” In my world view cost means more than just cash spent on something. Actually I might argue that the true price of the non-organic purchase is the long term affect of that purchase.

Actual Nutritional Content is the Genuine Measure

It is well known (and if not that’s ok as I’ll be announcing it again) the nutritional content of non-organic food is sad at best. What does this mean. It suggests you must eat, on average , 5 Broccoli crowns to equal just one organic broccoli crown to get the same nutritional benefits.

And I’d further this by saying that is even being generous to the non-organic discussion since having to eat so much food to get the equivalent nutrition means too much mass is being consumed, leading to overeating and obesity. We all know the numerous harmful influences of body weight problems.

What is the Real Cost of Non-Organic Food

Price of organic Broccoli = $3.79/lb (I’m using a price I see near me here on the west coast of Canada)

Non-Organic = $1.79 “Ok, it does not take a mathematician to see the simple difference in costs. But let’s take a look at things in terms of the very reason we eat food in the 1st place: to get nourished!

$3.79 x 1 (only 1 required for full nourishment) = $3.79

$1.79 x 3 (I’m being generous as some source say it takes up to 5 times as much) = $5.37

Therefore you’ll spend $5.37 for non-organic broccoli to get the same first nutritive benefits as $3.79 spent on organic broccoli. Why did I say primary benefits? Well, I haven’t even discussed taste yet! Your taste buds would be shot (your tongue and tastes are saturated in the need for sugars and salts) not to notice how much better organic food tastes.
